Today’s challenges, tomorrow’s solutions: EUrope fit for the future
2020 was a year of unprecedented challenges and disruption. Existing crises in climate, the economy, and politics were thrown into stark relief and new ones emerged. 2021 offers up a fresh chance to search for solutions, to turn from a continent and a Union fighting the present to one that is fit for the future. At the 89 Initiative, we believe these solutions need to be transnational. They need to include European youth. They need to leverage academic research to innovate policy. This is why we invite Europe’s thinkers and doers to our first virtual transnational conference. Over the span of three days, we will bring together young researchers, policymakers, activists, and academics from across the continent to talk about today’s most pressing challenges and tomorrow’s policy solutions.
Our 12 research teams from Athens, Bruges, and London will present their work and engage with experts in their respective fields, from COVID-19 to climate, innovation, and immigration. Over the past year, they have investigated asylum provisions during the pandemic, the use of civic education to combat populism, the impact of local climate emergency declarations, and the role of predictive analysis for data-driven innovation, among others. During our flagship conference, they will present their findings and make policy recommendations.
The conference brings together different disciplines, methodologies, national contexts, and themes, united by a common focus on evidence-based policy innovation. We want to spark cross-continental conversations and debates that span academia and policy, because the big questions often have more than one good answer. With six exciting panels and two keynote events, we invite you to join us in shaping a EUrope fit for the future.
