Call for applications: 89 Netherlands Research Officers!


89 Netherlands is looking for research officers for its democracy and climate research programmes! In this research cycle, the Democracy team is studying the role of energy cooperatives in a just energy transition in Europe, and the Climate team is studying the role of humanisation, digitalisation, and financialisation in transforming society to tackle climate change. Read on for more information about both positions, as well as instructions to apply!

Democracy:

Are you a student or PhD researcher with experience conducting research in the field of Democracy? Does your current research tie in with the theme of energy cooperatives as a new form of collaborative governance in the energy transition? Then you’re likely to be interested in becoming a Research Officer for the 89 Netherlands Democracy programme!

In this enriching role, you will be part of a small team working on research about how to facilitate the creation and enhance the contribution of energy cooperatives to a just energy transition.  Later you will present your findings on this topic in a policy report to be finalised in March or April 2022. This policy report will be shared and discussed with EU and national officials, academics, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders during the annual 89 Initiative and the 89 Netherlands/Studio Europa policy conferences.

The goal of the policy report is to shape tomorrow’s policy responses to today’s most pressing challenges by connecting European policies to local realities. Your specific tasks will be decided upon together with the Democracy Programme Research Director, Dr. Christian Scholl, based at the Maastricht Sustainability Institute. 

Tasks may include:

  • A literature review of recent research on energy cooperatives in Europe
  • Desk research of relevant websites and online databases
  • A survey of energy cooperatives on national/ European level
  • Qualitative interviews with key cooperative (network) representatives
  • Qualitative interviews with local, national and EU policy officials
  • A synthesis of key findings

This role will help hone your ability to conduct research, analyse policy, collaborate with other researchers, and present results in a policy-relevant and attractive way! A successful candidate will be naturally inquisitive and have a passion for (the intersection of) European and national politics and research. We would also be thrilled if this topic aligns closely with your research and can in some way benefit your own work.

This is a unique opportunity to:

  • Receive training on writing policy briefs;
  • Join a growing pan-European network of think-tanks headquartered at the London School of Economics (LSE);
  • Work remotely and alongside your studies while expanding upon your research and policy skills;
  • Publish your research, thoughts, and findings on the 89 Netherlands and 89 Initiative blogs; 
  • Work with a dedicated and dynamic team of other researchers;
  • establish a network of senior research and policy officials;
  • Build on your current and/or previous research; and 
  • Leverage your experience to do a PhD, work for an international development NGO, or become a public affairs consultant etc.!

Climate: 

Are you a student or PhD researcher with experience conducting research in the field of Climate? Does your current research tie in with the theme of Innovation for Sustainability, Sustainability Transitions, and New Economy visions and practices-in particular, Humanisation and Arts, Digitalisation and Computation, Finance and Public Policy ? Then you’re likely to be interested in becoming a Research Officer for the 89 Netherlands Climate programme!

In this enriching role, you will be part of a small team working on research about how to bring critical, creative, comprehensive and regenerative elements of humanisation, digitalisation, and finance together for societal transformations to tackle climate change, later presenting your findings on this topic in a policy report to be finalised in March or April 2022. This policy report will be shared and discussed with EU and national officials, academics, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders during the annual 89 Initiative and the 89 Netherlands/Studio Europa policy conferences!

The goal of the policy report is to shape tomorrow’s policy responses to today’s most pressing challenges by connecting European policies to local realities. Your specific tasks will be decided upon together with the Climate Programme Research Director Dr. Serdar Türkeli, based at UNU-MERIT. 

Tasks may include:

  • A systematic literature and policy review of current developments in humanisation, digitalisation, and financialisation in Europe, in particular, w.r.t. multiple value creation business models; social and sustainable entrepreneurship and innovations; transitions to new economy visions & practices (e.g circular economy); ecological analytics; sustainable finance/taxonomies, impact investment, crowdfunding
  • Creation of a compendium of key organisations and online databases, in particular by using network mapping tools for analysis and visualisation of multi-level networks e.g. Vosviewer, Gephi, kumu.io
  • Quantitative analysis of data using multi-method causal analysis, e.g. fs-QCA, Q-method, SEM PLS, or other computational methods
  • Compiling (new) indicators for monitoring and evaluation of sustainability transitions at city/regional level
  • Creation and/or curation of art, video, audio-visual communication outputs
  • Organising workshops and events
  • Qualitative interviews with local, national and EU level stakeholders, e.g. citizens, entrepreneurs, key representatives of civil society, academia, industrial associations, policy officials
  • A synthesis of key findings
